USERS of new currency exchange counters in Yangon on Thein Phyu Road are reporting difficulties because of the restrictions placed on changing money there, despite the higher rates on offer.

The centre was quoting US dollar buying and sales rates of K800 and K805 on October 18, significantly higher than the K780-785 available on the black market, said a money changer in Kyauktada township.

Myanmar nationals wishing to changes money at the exchange counters are required to provide their NRC card, passport and a Customs declaration form obtained when re-entering Myanmar stating how much foreign currency was being brought in.

NATIONAL carrier Myanmar Airways International will begin flights to the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh by November, an airline spokesperson said last week.

Flights for Phnom Penh via Siem Reap will depart each Wednesday and Saturday using a new Airbus A-321 that can accommodate 220 passengers.

“Hopefully we will receive a new Airbus A-321 on October 25 and will use it to fly to Phnom Penh via Siem Reap by November 2. On the return leg it will not stop in Siem Reap, it will fly directly to Yangon from Phnom Penh,” said Daw Aye Mra Tha, the airline’s marketing and commercial executive.

She said the company expected to attract more passengers on the new route than Yangon-Siem Reap because Phnom Penh was the business centre of Cambodia.

The company will also operate charter flights to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for the Hajj pilgrimage in November. “I hope we will operate five charter flights,” she said.

She said the company also plans to add one more flight to Gaya in India.

“Currently we operate two flights a week to Gaya – every Wednesday and Saturday – and we will soon add one more flight to Gaya to meet demand during the Bodhgaya pilgrimage season,” she said

A group of foreign tourists will explore Myanmar by hot air balloon this month.
THE government ended months of speculation last week when it announced that Myanmar’s first election in 20 years will be held on November 7.

The announcement, broadcast on MRTV-4 on August 13, gave political parties 86 days to prepare for the election. The long-awaited decision drew a mixed response from political parties, with some saying they were ready to contest the election. The information officer of the Democratic Party (Myanmar), U Hla Myint, said his party was not surprised by the announcement as it had expected that the election would be held in November. He said that while the November 7 date provides only a short time for campaigning, it will be adequate for the party, due to the support it is receiving from the public. But he added that the party was concerned about the cost of campaigning, because of regulations requiring each candidate to pay a registration fee of K500,000.

“We have already opened offices in Mandalay, Bago and Ayeyarwady divisions, and that shows that we have support from the public,” he said.

A spokesperson for the National Political Alliance, U Ohn Lwin, said he did not have high hopes for the coming election.

“You cannot expect a lot in the first election in 20 years,” he said. But the announcement of the election date was welcomed by the chairman of the Chin National Party, U Zon Zam. “The party is ready to contest the election and we warmly welcome the announcement,” he said.
The Union Solidarity and Development Party declined to comment on the announcement.
